Open Enrollment for benefits is a chore most of us would like to avoid. It can be confusing and is frequently boring. The benefits your company offers allows you to protect your finances by shifting risk with insurance and can minimize your tax burden with investment and savings options. Most large companies offer multiple health insurance plans, flexible spending accounts and 401(K) retirement saving options. Health Insurance plans used to be easily understood, a major medical plan with a deductible or an HMO – Health Maintenance Organization – a group of physicians that you can use for a small fee or co-pay. Now you may also have the option of an HSA – Health Savings Account – a health insurance plan with an attached savings plan you and your employer may contribute to. The funds in the account are then used for out of pocket expenses like deductibles and prescriptions and are tax deductible. This is not to be confused with a medical FSA – Flexible Savings Arrangement. An FSA allows you to save part of your paycheck to be used for medical expenses. The amounts you or your employer contributes are pre-tax and therefore reduce your overall income, but are not deductible. What should you take from your employer’s plan and which should you pass on?
